Summer is here, although it has been hot for weeks, and now it's cooled down and raining. A nice break.
I wish I could send some rain to Texas and Arizona!
I have been thinking of beachcombing, and the cool pacific ocean,

so I took a few photos of my shell collection I keep in Jars in the bathroom.

I added a fresh gardenia from my neighbors bushes. She is so nice to share.

I do think the two go together perfectly.

We collected all the shells from Oregon and Fl. except the starfish.

I tried that, and you just can't get the bad smell from them.

So anyone ready for some cool ocean air?

soooo,,,I played with it....still working on it......

I turned over the cross to the side with the collage book page...added black lace, roses, wired beads to the tag... Punched the corners of the note card Lilla sent..added a couple of cat hairs,,sigh,,,. I will do the other side too using the saint and prayer cards. It was nice to have the parts to get started with.

Blessings in The Mail

It was a "good" day for the mail box. It is amazing what My Miz Rebecca sent from Oregon. Thank you so much, what a kind, and thoughtful, and talented, and generous dear, dear, friend you are.

I have a couple of more postings to do about her.

My kitchen is blue and white.

Flow blue plate!!! Blue willow plate and 2 saucers will go on the wall. The cobalt salt and peppers, and the shot glasses are in the window over the sink now. I love the light shining through them.

I am still blown away by this gift. Everything is found at Miz Rebecca's favorite digs...she finds the best goodies at the best prices....it's amazing really.

The child's cup and saucer are so wonderful. I love the serving spoon.

I have never had a mortar and pestle...and in blue and white!

Too perfect, and the words,,,perfect!!

Cat postcards Rebecca found, the first one has a squeaker in it.

I have cat pictures in the powder room.

These last two pictures are from The Scented Room. It is a wonderful book.

Another box contained these roses from my sister, I will really enjoy crafting with these.

I just couldn't stay in, when there was all the snow to look at in my favorite part of town.

It has been 21yr. since we had a White Christmas in Alabama. It was rare even when we lived in Oregon.

Snow makes Chrismas much more festive dosen't it.

A 1970's gift from Grandma

I have seen these done in golds and whites and they can be spectacular. I appreciate having this, glad I saved it,,however, I may have to add to it, or alter it, at least change the lights to white, maybe paint the frame white.

It is 21"x27"...kinda big, and rather tacky.

I think it was a popular craft back in the early to mid 1970's.

After comparing stories, my sister and I think she bought one for each of us at a Church Bazaar.

Grandma did needlework mostly.

Some of the bling is nice. The sparklies are hard to photograph.

Lots of broken bottles.

Something to do with old junk jewelry to give it a new life.

Here is the back, to see how it was done. It was done on artist canvas. I suppose you would make the holes first, put the velvet on, then get the tree lights on, then add the broken glass and bling. Looks like hot glue was used. I was amazed the lights still worked after all these years in a box. I haven't hung it in probably 20yr. ...and when I did it, was in a dark spot at the end of a hallway, it's festive and not too bad at a distance. I'm looking forward to decorating for Christmas this year, now that we are settled. I just have to finish painting the family room first.

No, I didn't make it, I'm not that old,,yet.

Dated 1887!

But, I did cut it up, after I had it on the wall for a while.

The silk was rotting in places pretty bad.

I also had a living to make. So I made doll clothes, and other things to sell.

Back then you could get really great old quilts very cheep.

I can't even begin to tell you how many cutter quilts I took apart.

Then sometimes the inside was really great and usually the backing. I saved all of it.

I wonder about M.E. and what her life was like in 1887, and how many other fabulous needlework projects she left behind. I kept some of the prettiest parts of course.

This is a hanging pillow thingy I made from another quilt. I had to repair it a bit, but I tried not to change it. I have another piece of that black velvet area with beading someplace.

Sweet fan, star, and umbrella.

This is the backing fabric.

I made this pouch from quilt scraps about 15 yr. ago.

It held my business cards at the trade shows.

It's ok to take cutter quilts apart, it's hard to make the first cut sometimes.

Old quilts are coming down in price I have noticed.

An antique dealer told me the young people don't care for them.

I have a hard time believing that.

It was a beautiful day for The Veterans Day Parade. People came out in droves to enjoy it. My husbands boss kicked him out of the office to go, as he is the only Veteran. We were also treated to lunch. It was a nice honor and surprise. This very much a military community, and watching the marching soldiers brought tears to my eyes. Thank you to all the Veterans and their families everywhere, for your sacrifices, duty, and love of our country.

I am also embarrassed that our US Army soldier makes only 22 thousand a year.

Average American makes around 50

Average congressman makes around 75

Average federal employee makes around 174

Congress should also go to VA medical centers....and definitely not make more than our front line servicemen.

I have always enjoyed flying. Especially in small planes. My husband can fly, I even took a few lessons.

We have a friend who took us to lunch one day.

The Runway Restaurant (near Birmingham Alabama) is where you park your plane on the grass in front, and proceed to pork out on good burgers. The women sat in the back and tried to talk in all the noise, find their houses, do allot of sign language, and take photos of the Tennessee River ways. I tried to tell my hubby he was long, long overdue for a hair cut that morning.

But, that day it was more fun to go to

I don't remember where or when I got this,,probably an estate sale in Oregon...I have had it a long time,(it's 40") it was a mess, so I finally got around to pressing and repairing it, trying not to alter it too much. It is on a soft linen with pulled threads. I wonder about the woman who made it,, what Her Dreams were,,,do you think it was it a sampler for her own records,....hummm...

I like to think she would be Glad someone appreciated it.

It is laying on my Great Grandmothers Quilt that means so much to me.

I might have to make one of my own, I don't crochet, yet, but I won't let that stop me.

A Little Fun

I managed across this aqua hat at a great antique mall I discovered recently.

This is the outside,,,my kind of place..It was Just Loaded with goodies!

I freed this iron planter to hang on the brick, between two windows on the front porch.

A much nicer life for it than stuck in that tub.

The good thing is it was a "cash only" kinda place,,,saved me from over spending.

They don't have booths either,,it is grouped by theme and colors inside.

I will go back.

Sweet little bag of goodies

At an estate sale these were jammed in a plastic bag, with many other sewing odds and ends.

The bag was taped shut so I couldn't see, but I just knew to get it.

The booklet is an old "Work Basket", and it was folded so that I had no idea what the paper was, or what it held. It held the crosses. Also the instructions.

Little doily pieces, buttons, thimbles, crochet balls, embroidery thread, etc,,,,Heavenly!

My Grandmother gave me my first bible, and she made a pink and white cross book mark for it...I have it packed away, I will find it and add it later.

The Cotton Blooms

Pokeing around the garden I decided to show you how pretty a cotton plant can be, prior to spinning and sewing it. The bloom starts out off white, turns pinkish, darkens and dries up and falls off.

(I think I better press the green part)

After the flower falls, the pod forms. It is about the size of a ping pong ball here.

I planted about 10 plants, just to observe. It is in fields everywhere here, but up close is very interesting.

I am sending you a big southern hugggg from an out of place, fellow Yankee.

I had the good fortune to find a book from 1960 that teaches Braille. It captured me, and for the three dollars, well, wouldn't you get it? It was one of those moments, you know that you know, that you know it's right, and you hold it tight to your chest and feel it means....something good.

The creamy pages, and the millions of thoughts of all the perforations, what it must mean to one who has no sight. It makes me so grateful for the gift of sight, and all my other senses. Helen Keller lost her sight and hearing, and became a remarkable woman that brought courage to millions of blind people. She was born only an hour from here,,,, click here to learn more. I read quite a bit about her, discovered to my disappointment that she was a socialist. Oh well, she did some good. We visited Ivy Green a couple of years ago, it is a very charming place.

I am further inspired to finish the piece in the first photo, and I am exploding with ideas. I have dishes in the sink, and I do not care.

We fished for catfish on Green Mountian Lake.

It was early,, and quiet.

I love the atmosphere and noise the bridge makes.

See where the fish jumped..

There were Canadian Geese, some on their nests.

We had grain fed catfish for supper this evening.
The best I ever ate.

We will go back...soon, to Green Mountian in Madison County.

Just One of Those Days..

I just have one of those days occasionally,,,where I drop everything I touch.

The idea to photograph this little chick getting dressed up was a good one, I thought...

Then this happened,,,,I said a bad word, I think could have neighbors heard me.

It was my favorite butter pat.

It wasn't, the f bomb, I will leave that one to the politician's.

Over an hour later, I had glued all the pieces I could find and fit.

was the goofy chick worth it?...ummm, no.

The next day I found the chick in another room, the cat thought it was hers.
Of course she did.

Actually, I will change that to YES, as I got to thinking how unimportant "things" are. How we all are broken, and are beautiful anyhow. The intense energy I expelled on the butter pat, was truly a waste.

In a moment, God can take it all away, it's all his anyhow.

I am glad I broke the pat, and now it will be a reminder of "where" to put my mind, the next time I have One Of Those Days.

A step into the past always leaves me wondering.

I wonder who "was" Ester?

How did her life turn out.

I can just see the blue velvet autograph book new, so soft and full of memories of friends.

The well wishes written appear to be from collage classmates, all dated in 1891.

Like an intimate class year book.

The pages are delicate, stained, and some falling out. A child scribbled in pencil on some.

Many of them wrote poems.

Estate Sale,,,it was so good,,,I was soooo good,,I could have gone crazy,,

I did manage to pick out some sheet music just for the covers.

Maybe you can use these in your art.

Now, this fit in the scanner, most are too wide.

I wonder if they made their own ribbon to go in the blank spot.

Let me know if you desire more, I will be happy to share.

Playing in A Half Bath

Playing in the Half Bath, or Ladies Parlor, as I prefer to call it.

I like to change the names of people, places, and things.

I haven't got a decorating clue, so I will plaster the walls with old cat pictures, and stuff I already have.

The room was already freshly painted. A new color for me, and I find it refreshing.

It reminds me of Linda K. althought it is not exactly Robins Egg Blue.

I love the saying on the old box, I don't remember where I got half the stuff I got. Not proper english, and I love that, just plain talk.

The China doll is dated 1873, she is missing some things, head poorly glued on, I can relate.

I started hanging things just because. I have given everything a good disenfecting, but the dredded grout is very old and needs special attention. How annoying.

The Curtians will be changed.

I hung a piece of old crochet on the built in towel bar over the toilet. The bar does not come out, and the porcelain cannot be removed without taking out a few tiles. Not doing new tiles just now.

I have had this old cat picture for eons, it matches better than the color shows here.
And I always have PennyWinkle to supervise,,,everything! Little stinker.

I bought this pen,,($7.00),,probably a mistake,,,I am going to try it before I break out the "acid".

I will let you know. My sister, Melodie, told me about seeing it on HGTV, this is a different brand Mel.

Simonize Fix It Grout is better according to them, as it goes in deep, and eats the oils and grime build up...gross.

You have to order it on line, and I didn't want to wait, or pay postage.

A couple days later.....IT WORKS! I now have totally white grout that looks like new.
A few tricks to it, do a little at a time with good light, a wet paper towel didn't work for me, I used my fingers to remove excess from the tiles washing with soap and water...and,, learn to stand on your head! LOL

I am so looking forward to the back of the toilet....smile.

The main bath is white and yellow tile,,,another new color...yellow...

The porcelain soap dish and toothbrush holder is permanent,,,must disguise...and more grout lines!

That is what I will be doing this week.

I have been busy getting settled, and watching alot of home a garden shows on TV. Now that spring is totally here, our attention has turned to the new yard, and we are having a vege garden for the first time in alot of years. Should be interesting, wonder if I can remember how to can, wonder if it will be worth it. It does bring out the neighbors so we can get to know them, as many of them have gardens too. I am more of a flower container garden gal, but I am looking forward to putting in some Crepe Myrtles pretty soon, just to get started. They are my favorite southern plant, as they flower so long.

My southern gentleman brought this brass and ironrod bed end home yesterday, a friend gave it to him. Isn't he just is a keeper!

So,,,Marcy,,, how should I refinish it??? Or should I? Any ideas would be appriciated from anyone.

I am glad to have these photos out again, as all these dolls have new homes in America. The photos are grainy and it was before I got a digital camera or worked on a computer.

Many of my dolls back then were more on the grungy side, I will save them for another day.

Old Collections, and Dusty Memories

I haven't seen most of these jars, since 1985, at least that is what the newspaper wrapping is dated, I'd say that is just about right. I thought I got rid of them, now I'm glad I put them in storage.

Some contain the ash from Mt.Saint Helens when it erupted in Washington state. I will never forget that day, and the weeks following. I lived on the north side of Portland Oregon, about a 90 min drive to the mountian. I remember the sound of the ash falling. The ash drifted in the curbs, everything was dusted with ash for a very long time. When I unpack, the dust of memories are welcome, a bit of time travel. I will share other old friends in time. I used to make dolls, and managed to save some of them. They are glad to breath again, and check out the new digs.

I even remember getting the rusty coffee pot at a sale, still marked fifty cents. I know you understand the deal there. I don't call this the Rustic Victorian for nothing. Ok, back to the mess I just made, and cleaning up the jars a bit. I am having way more fun than I deserve.

A Fairy Godmother Please

I could use a Fairy Godmother,,,one to unpack and organize my life, the stuff....I am never moving again. Moving has been a chore, it seems to take me so much longer to get settled, and decide what to do with everything. I wonder why I have so much stuff....and I want to go to an Estate Sale today...how nutty is that.

I will be back soon with some things to share, I just wanted to touch base with you and let you know how much I have missed all of you and your blogs. I have tons to catch up on, and share.

When one feels peace, you know your on the right track.

We will sign the contract for the house on Friday, and move next week. I have looked at enough dang Real Estate to last a life time. It has been an emotional rollercoaster at times, I have given up, started over, and given up again...but it has all worked out, and I am looking forward to the "right" house,,finally. I must thank my family and friends for your support during the process. My sister Melodie, has taken the worse hit, thank you Mel for listening and mentoring and always being there. I love you to infinity and beyond. Now there is peace, we are where we are supposed to be. This may be the last post for a bit,,,, if I can stay away.

Yes, again, the art started long ago.

The Victorians had more time on their hands, and were some of the first to play with scrapbooking and collage, using old photos.

I wonder what they would have done with Photoshop???

There are many albums from the 1800's on line at museums. The research I did was mostly at The Art Institute of Chicago.

So many more pages from the 1800's to enjoy.

Cutie Pie and Puppy Breath

I came across this sweet image in my collection, it had been cut out and put in a victorian scrapbook I purchased long ago. The paper is so old in the scrapbook, it falls apart when you touch it. They used flour and water paste back then. Imagine that! Now, there is a zillion glues on the market.

I have seen it before,,out there,,somewhere,,maby Dover,,,hummm. Anyhow, I scanned it on some "new" K&Co. paper for you to use . The white spots are just from age, and I don't know how to get rid of them, maby you do. So many of the old paper art is reproduced now, and I don't have the time or inclination to do the research, so use at your own risk anything that you see on my blog. I will share more of the scraps.

I think I will escape to the craft room today, husband said something about football and a three stooges marathon....he needs an escape too I guess. I smile at the little boy in my 61yr. old man.

A good relaxing way to start the New Year.

I do feel so blessed by Donna, as she gifted me one of her needle keeps.

It is so sweet to hold in your hand, there are 2 pockets for needfull things, and layers of soft fine wool for needles and pins.

I started playing with it and before you know it I had added,,, some,,,things. They just jumped in there.

I searched all over the internet for special Nativity images for this post...I was not getting anywhere. I wanted some that were new to me, and hopefully to you.

I became still, and "suddenly" I remembered the old Ideals on the shelf.

Many times, most times, the thing you need is right in front of you.

This is not a new experience for me, I know the lesson well. I get off track, forget,,

I'm All crooked, like this image below,

especially when we are struggling in some way,,,, so I will try to remember to be still, and know that God is always holding my hand, and will lead me back on the path like the child that I am.

I thank God everyday,, as,, I am a real mess on my own.

The most undescribable Gift of God's Love is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

I can only imagine what the "stillness" of that night felt like...I will know one day.

An Old Christmas Card

When I opened this card, I was surprised it was for Christmas. There is no maker on the back and it has the cut-away corner frame in old gold that has tarnished. It is delicate and soft, I wish you could feel it.

It sort of suits my mood these days, soft and a bit tarnished, and the flowers,,,well, I think looking forward to a new year, new growth, optimism, and kindness.

The older I get the faster December comes around. We started it with a heavy frost this morning. In this climate the seasons turn faster than in Oregon....more defined. It is a cool sunny day, and I am glad for the light. I am a cold weather person, and love this time of year. Allot of things to do,,and grateful to have another day to get it right. I don't remember where I heard the saying, "Winter is the promise of Spring", but I have always liked it,,,,it says "Hope" to me. Have good thoughts today my friends.
